The Coton de Tulear Breed History & Characteristics

The Coton de Tulear, also known as the Royal Dog of Madagascar, is a small and friendly dog breed that originated in Madagascar. These charming dogs have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their adorable appearance, cheerful temperament, and hypoallergenic fur.

In this article, we will explore the history of the Coton de Tulear, their temperament, family friendliness, habits and traits, colors, and hypoallergenic fur.

History of the Coton de Tulear

Origins of Cotons

The Coton de Tulear is believed to have originated in Madagascar, an island nation off the coast of Africa. The breed's name comes from the French word "coton," which means cotton, referring to their soft, cotton-like fur, and "Tulear," the name of the city on the west coast of Madagascar where they were first discovered.

The Coton de Tulear was originally bred as a companion dog for the wealthy aristocracy of Madagascar. They were highly prized for their charming personality, loyalty, and hypoallergenic coat. The breed was so valued that it was forbidden for anyone outside of the aristocracy to own one.

The Coton de Tulear remained relatively unknown outside of Madagascar until the 1970s when a Frenchman named Dr. Robert Jay Russell discovered the breed while on vacation. Dr. Russell was so taken with the dogs that he began importing them to Europe and North America. Today, the breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and is becoming increasingly popular as a family pet.
